System Selection & Cache Valley Climate

Do I need a different size furnace for my Logan home than I would for the same house in Salt Lake City?
Yes, and not by a small amount. Cache Valley sits in IECC Climate Zone 5B per the 2021 code adoption, but valley-floor conditions during PCAPS inversion stagnation routinely exceed 5B design assumptions. Because air density at 4,500 feet drops to approximately 0.0648 lb/ft³ compared to the sea-level 0.0765 lb/ft³ that manufacturers use as the baseline for combustion specifications. That’s a 15% reduction in oxygen mass per cubic foot of intake air. A non-derated 100,000 BTU/hr furnace shipped from a Midwest distributor will run rich at our elevation, soot the heat exchanger within two heating seasons, and lose AFUE-rated efficiency on a schedule the warranty doesn’t cover. Will a heat pump actually work in Cache Valley winters?
Yes, but only if you select cold-climate variable-capacity equipment rated for 100% nameplate capacity at 5°F outdoor temperature — not the manufacturer’s AHRI 47°F rating. Standard heat pumps lose roughly 50% of rated capacity at 10°F, exactly when the heating load peaks in Cache Valley. Refrigerants & the 2025 R-454B Transition

What changed about HVAC refrigerants in 2025?
The EPA AIM Act required new residential air conditioning and heat pump equipment manufactured after January 1, 2025, to use refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) under 700. R-410A, the standard for the prior decade, has a GWP of approximately 2,088 and was phased out for new equipment. Should I replace my working R-410A unit early to avoid the transition?
Almost certainly not. R-410A refrigerant is still available, will be available for service for the working life of installed equipment (typically through the 2030s), and the EPA AIM Act regulates new manufacture, not existing systems. The cost of premature replacement vastly exceeds the cost of continuing to service a working R-410A unit. Where early replacement might make sense: a 14+ year old unit with declining efficiency that you would replace anyway within 2–3 years; a unit with a failed compressor where R-454B-compliant replacement equipment is now the standard installation; or a unit that qualifies for substantial federal IRA 25C tax credits or utility rebates that offset the replacement cost.

How often should my furnace be serviced in Cache Valley?
