Refrigerant Types in Current Cache Valley Equipment
The installed base of Cache Valley AC and heat pump equipment uses four primary refrigerants, with the 2025 transition shifting new equipment to lower-GWP options:

Less common refrigerants in residential service: R-407C (some legacy equipment), R-422D (R-22 retrofit refrigerant; we don’t recommend for residential applications), R-134a (some specialty applications). Velox services all refrigerant types with EPA Section 608 Universal certification.
Why Recharge Is Not Routine Maintenance
Some contractors market refrigerant recharge as an annual maintenance item. It isn’t. The sealed refrigerant circuit shouldn’t lose charge over time in normal operation. Annual recharging means: there’s a leak that’s not being addressed; the previous service technician didn’t verify the charge correctly at install; the equipment has a manufacturing defect that the manufacturer should address under warranty; or the previous service work introduced contamination that’s consuming refrigerant through chemical reaction with system contaminants. None of those scenarios are improved by adding more refrigerant; all require diagnosis and repair of the underlying condition.
Recharge legitimate scenarios include: post-installation top-off when commissioning measurements indicate the AHRI-rated charge plus line set length compensation requires additional refrigerant; post-repair recharge when a major component (compressor, evaporator coil, condenser coil) has been replaced; post-leak-repair recharge when a verified leak has been repaired and the system needs new charge. Each of these is a one-time event, not an annual maintenance task.
The Velox Leak Detection Process
When a system presents with low refrigerant charge symptoms (extended runtime, supply temperature differential below 16°F, evaporator icing, compressor short-cycling on low-pressure cutout), the diagnostic sequence:
- Pressure measurement — Yellow Jacket digital manifold gauges measure high-side and low-side pressures. Comparison against manufacturer specification at the measured outdoor and indoor conditions indicates whether the charge is in spec, low, or overcharged. Severely low pressures (below 50 psi suction on R-410A in normal operating conditions, for example) indicate substantial charge loss.
- Superheat and subcooling calculation — measured temperatures at the outdoor unit liquid and suction lines, combined with measured saturation temperatures from the gauge readings, calculate superheat (vapor temperature minus saturation temperature at suction-side pressure) and subcooling (saturation temperature at liquid-side pressure minus liquid temperature). High superheat with low subcooling characteristically indicates undercharge.
- Electronic leak detection — TIF8800X heated-diode leak detector swept across accessible refrigerant joints, valve cores, brazed connections, and coil surfaces. The detector responds to halogenated refrigerant molecules in air at concentrations as low as 0.5 oz/year leak rate. Sensitivity is highest on R-22 and R-410A (chlorinated compounds), slightly lower on R-454B and R-32 (no chlorine, requires the detector’s general halogen sensitivity).
- UV dye injection — when electronic detection is inconclusive (very small leaks, leaks in inaccessible locations), we inject UV-fluorescent refrigerant dye into the system. After 24–72 hours of operation, the dye accumulates at the leak point and is visible under UV light. We schedule the return visit when sufficient operation has occurred for the dye to migrate to leak sites.
- Coil pressure testing — for suspected coil leaks where electronic detection and UV dye haven’t localized the leak, we can isolate the indoor or outdoor coil under nitrogen pressure (typically 150–300 psi depending on coil rating) and observe pressure decay over time, then apply soap solution to fittings and braze joints to visually identify the leak.

Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging Procedure
Refrigerant work in residential systems requires EPA Section 608 Universal certification, which all Velox HVAC technicians hold. The procedure for refrigerant recovery and recharge:
- Recovery to cylinder — refrigerant recovered from the system to a DOT-approved recovery cylinder using an Appion G5 or equivalent recovery machine. Recovery continues until system pressure reaches the manufacturer-specified recovery vacuum (typically 0–4” Hg below atmospheric for newer equipment). Recovery time varies with system size and refrigerant type: typical residential 2–5 ton system recovery runs 20–45 minutes.
- Recovery cylinder identification — recovered refrigerant labeled by type, source, and date. Mixed refrigerants in a cylinder are unreclaimable and require destruction; segregating recovered refrigerants by type preserves reclamation value.
- Repair work — whatever repair triggered the refrigerant work: leak repair by brazing or component replacement, compressor replacement, coil replacement, line set repair.
- Filter-drier replacement — mandatory after any refrigerant circuit opening, even brief. The filter-drier captures moisture and contaminants that entered during the open period. New filter-drier installed before evacuation.

- R-22 systems requiring significant refrigerant — recharging a 5-pound R-22 system at $150–$240 per pound costs $750–$1,200. Full replacement with R-454B or R-32 equipment captures efficiency gains and applicable tax credits.
- Coil leaks on equipment over 10 years old — coil replacement labor cost approaches the cost of full system replacement on older equipment with multiple developing issues.

- Can I buy refrigerant myself and have Velox just install it?
- No, for two practical and one legal reason. Practical reasons: refrigerant quality varies widely outside the regulated supply chain — counterfeit, contaminated, and mislabeled refrigerant is a recurring problem with consumer-purchased material, and installing contaminated refrigerant in a customer system damages the equipment. Velox refrigerant comes from authorized distributors with batch traceability to the manufacturer. The other practical reason: contamination from homeowner-handled refrigerant containers (moisture exposure, mixed refrigerants from cross-contaminated cylinders, air contamination from improper transfer) creates compressor risk that the homeowner saves money on the refrigerant only to spend much more on the resulting compressor damage. Legal reason: EPA Section 608 restricts refrigerant sales to certified individuals and registered businesses for most HVAC refrigerants; the regulatory framework doesn’t contemplate customer-supplied refrigerant for professional service work. We won’t install customer-supplied refrigerant.
- Will refrigerant recharge solve my high cooling cost?
- Sometimes — if low refrigerant was the cause of the high cost. If all of these fail to localize the leak: we can recharge the system and document the unresolved leak in the service record, with the homeowner’s explicit acknowledgment that the leak rate may continue; we can recommend replacement of suspected leaking components (typically evaporator coil) even without confirmed leak location, if the leak rate is significant enough to warrant; we can recommend full system replacement, particularly on equipment near end of service life.
